To celebrate two colleagues’ early June birthdays last Friday, we had dinner and drinks for the occasion. The KTV part wasn’t part of the plan but when I wanted to be a loser and call it a day at 9pm on a Friday night (it was a long week!), my evil colleagues tempted me with a KTV session.
And I succumbed rather easily. :P To give myself some credit, I have yet to be to a KTV in HK and I’ve been here 10 months! Andddd, the last time I went to a KTV was before I moved to HK so it was seriously overdue. I was a little hesitant at first cos I only just recovered my voice but Michelle claimed it was the best time to sing cos my coarse voice would help “emote the songs better”. O_o

My colleagues were quite sweet to let me pick the songs first, in honour of having them as my first HK KTV pals. hahahaha
But I have to tell you, the Cantonese sure are better than the Singaporeans (sorry pals. :() at KTV! Surprisingly, I know most of the Chinese songs they sang and I think it helped that they picked a lot of the older songs.
By 1am, my voice was going, going, gone. Louise was some sort of a voice tracker. “Your voice is going off.” “Your voice is really gone!”
………..
We left at 2am and I was a happy camper. Even though, my voice was raspy again, I went to bed with a smile on my face. :)
And last night, we had barbie at a soon-to-be-ex-colleague’s place. When other colleagues first told me Cherie’s place is far, I asked how far. They said, it’s closer to China than where you’re staying in Central. I thought they were exaggerating. They weren’t.
We took an hour’s drive to get there (where Michelle and I both fell asleep and when we woke up, we still weren’t there!) and gasp, it was right next to Shenzhen Bay. Wow. It’s where the cabs in HK are green! Hur hur hur.
And later on the way home, Fiona dropped Elaine and I (after a scenic 20-min drive) at Tsing Yi Airport Express station and we actually took that express train back to Central. Wow. I didn’t know HK can be THIS big! Hehe, but quite an eye-opener! Elaine and I were pretty stoked it only cost HK$20 (S$4) for the ride home, compared to the usual HK$100 (S$20) from the airport which is just a stop away.
Given that it was a spontaneous barbie session that was planned just two days before, the turnout was surprisingly good! I think there were at least a good 20 of us (inclusive of partners and two children) and it was a really funny night even though I couldn’t understand most jokes. But thank god for Louise who is always so willing to translate conversations for me and could even reenact them pretty well, I would get the jokes, albeit it’s like a good 20 secs later… :/
Even though language is still quite a barrier given that Cantonese is everyone’s first dialect in HK, I really enjoy my colleagues. They’re really a bunch of fun people. :)

From left here are Michelle, Jessie, (small) Winnie (cos we’ve two Winnies), Elaine and Louise.

And here I am, stalking colleagues' cute daughters as usual.

And a family pic! The power of great spotlights and self-timer.
Michelle was teasing me as usual, saying I don’t have friends in HK and I was defensive cos I do now! I was like “I do have a group of friends here ok!” with my bunch of Singaporean friends in mind. And she replied, “No lah, we’re your friends too!” Aw! :D
