Graffiti in Melbourne

Today’s weather in Melbourne is purrr-fect! The sky was so blue and beautiful. I was so stoked cos yesterday was cloudy and pouring. Sucks. I never realised how much the weather affects my mood (what’s the name of that psychological illness that’s caused by gloomy weather?) till today when I was happy just cos the weather was so lovely! And it wasn’t too cold at 12 degrees Celsius too. Still very do-able. :)

Anyhow, one of the many things I was looking forward to was actually the graffiti in Melbourne streets. I’m not one of those who thinks graffiti is vandalism (well, unless it’s fugly graffiti). In fact, I love great graffiti works so much that I consider them art.

It’s probably due to my love for colours. I love how you walk down rows and rows or grey buildings and hidden at that little lane is an explosion of colours that is so visually stunning and pleasing.

Meanwhile, I’m gonna pass out on the cosy bed. Completely knackered from a long day. Night world!

Seeing red

I lurveee all my colours to death. They can be bright, neon, monotone, earthy, whatever. I love them all! But I do have a favourite colour if I’m forced to pick. And I do get impressed when friends can guess my fave colour cos it’s not obvious. I remember Bern getting it right before and I just asked Matt and he said confidently: “Red!”

There’s something very intense and strong about red that I’m so drawn to the colour. So far, I’ve been fortunate that the colour looks fine on me when I wear it but I’m not lucky enough to carry off that colour on my lips.

I really, really love the whole siren look that Scarlett Johansson and Marilyn Monroe (beauty-wise, not style-wise) have but I’m never gonna be fair enough to sport a fiery red lipstick shade. :(

Here’s the dress I saw on the mannequin at Indigo on Chapel Street:

The day after I saw the dress, I stumbled upon another Indigo store in the city and the only size 8 they have was on hold but they allowed me to try it anyway. And I did:

I like it a lot but it looks better on the mannequin than on me. :( And the dress is rather sheer…

The extremely helpful sales person called the other branches but Melbourne had ran out of size 8. She called Sydney and they’re gonna send the dress over! Talk about great service!

Then today, I was at St. Kilda when I saw this range of vintage hats in Flocks and Slacks. I dunno what’s up with me and headgear lately. I’ve accumulated about 10 hats and head bands in the past two months. O_o And when I saw the red vintage head wrap, I was a little apprehensive as it’s a style I’d never tried before. But I thought it was really fun and why not!

Please not to laugh at me like Matt did!

And lastly on my red agenda (then again, it’s not really an agenda, they just happen to be naice and caught my eyes!) is this red pair of vintage gloves at Shag with cute little bows at the side. How lovely!

My kewpies

Being able to see my little niece and nephew again was, honestly, the thing that excited me the most about going back to Singapore again, despite the heat! Seth didn’t remember me as well as Kirsten did and though I was a little bummed out, I love how Kiks still endeared herself to me. :)

It didn’t take long for Seth to know I’m his yiyi too. When we were out for a family dinner at Expo, Gor, Matt and I brought the kids on a walkabout where they went crazy running through Expo and making the adults ran with them. Actually, Kiks was the one who instigated all the running. Seth has completely became the copycat and does whatever his che che asked him to do. Seth cannot make it lah. Ran so slow and after a while, Gor picked him up instead. Hahaha, short legs.

We stumbled upon a dog show and I love how happy the kids were. Kiks ran after almost every dog, no matter the size and Seth just went “Dog dog!” and waved at them. :)

After a while of playing with them, Seth took to me and chose me to run towards to among my family (exclusive of his parents lah, of course) and his family helper. Yes, I’m competitive that way. hahahaha! I was so stoked though.

Earlier, before dinner, Seth was intrigued by Matt’s toy helicopter and I kept saying to him “helicopter. helicopter.” He kept repeating some intangible word but we were all very impressed that he made it out to be four syllabus and it did sound very remotely like helicopter. hahahaah

It was just a family dinner and some wandering around but I felt so bliss out. :)

I wanted to check out the new shopping mall in Tampines to see what’s all the hype about but Matt and I were absolutely knackered from an afternoon of cycling (me) and blading (him). The sun just drains you out, doesn’t it! Ah well, the next weekend then!

On Saturday, I brought Kirsten to Sue’s housewarming. Didi couldn’t go cos he’s a wee little boy and Kiks was super excited about seeing Waffles (“Waffy!). Bern was so sweet to come pick us up and it was quite hilarious hearing the little girl talked during the drive and she even told Matt off when he tried to tickle her. hahahaha

Once Kiks entered Sue’s place, she started crawling like a dog and bark so she could be, erm, pals with Waffles. Then we started bringing out Rock Band, that girl lost all interest in Waff and just stared at the screen. Matt distracted her by bringing her to the playground for an extended period while her lousy aunt played Rock Band with Sue instead. Hur hur.

Guilt kicked in when Bern was making pasta for Kiks’ dinner so I decided to be the dutiful aunt and went to look for the two kids at the playground.

While waiting for Kiks’ parents came to pick her up, Matt, her and I were waiting at the carpark when Kiks told us: “See, the sky is so dark now. That means there will be thunder later and the monster will come out and bite Kirsten.” Awww! That poor little girl is fearful of thunderstorms and there had apparently been quite a few in Singapore recently. Matt told Kirsten that thunderstorms are part of nature’s work and Kiks just nodded along. I doubt she really understood that! My poor little niece.

Anyhow, Matt told me something that really cracked me last night! He was reading his emails from his patients when he told me in a panic: “My patient just told me she did my exercises until she vomited blood! Huh?! How is that possible?!” And I couldn’t stop laughing for a full 20 seconds. I translated the Singlish for him and told him his patient didn’t literally vomit blood. She just meant to say it was very exhausting and tiring. Hahahahahahaa

Day 3 in Melbourne

Sorry! I suck at this blogging business! I’ve been in Melbourne three days now and I lurve this city! The weather’s at a nice 9 to 21 degree Celsius. It’s still quite chilly, especially at night but I think my body’s getting quite used to colder temperatures since I moved to Hong Kong. My fave temperature is 20 degree Celsius! Nothing more, nothing less.

Though Melbourne’s a lovely city, at the end of the day, I’m here for work so that’s a bit of a bummer but I made myself change my mindset (trying to practise the whole change-your-mindset-when-you-can’t-change-the-situation philosophy!) and I look for joy in discoveries of every sort.

A shop that sells mineral water cheaper than others, an elderly lady stopping me to tell me to keep my Nikon in my bag cos “this is Australia, my girl!”, yummy food (I had, like, the best marinara pasta today!!!) and this dude who stopped me on the street when I was doing my ‘illegitimate’ product shooting of stores’ windows. I thought he was gonna reprimand me like how I’m used to whenever I’m on this assignment. Instead, he spent the next minute coaching me how to do the shooting without reflection from the street lights. Hahahahah! I love the Australians.

And of course! Getting to spend some one-on-one time with Christine and actually getting to know Dwayne properly. All these years of hearing about him from Christine and meeting him for the first time at their wedding (!!!), I don’t even really know him but I’m really happy I get to spend some time with the lovely couple. They’re so lovey-dovey, they made me missed my boyfriend. :(

The girl is happily married, renting a house with her husband in the suburbs, husband drives a Toyota Rav4 (I like!), they’re looking to buy their own property. I know that’s a predictable process for all married couples but I’ve never crave for such stability more in my life right now… Predictability can be a huge source of comfort and security. No? I don’t even want marriage right now. All I want is to know when can Matt and I reside in the same city??

Speaking of security, I don’t really have that in my current hotel, which I’ll have to stay for the next 8 nights. :/ It’s quite lovely cos it’s an old motor hotel (read: motel) turned into a boutique hotel but the door knob is just a dead lock from inside. There’s no double or triple locking! And security’s not tight at the reception, it’s not hard for creeps in climb in at all! :(

Anyhow, this is how my rooms (the green one’s for the first night. Red one is where I’ll be staying for the next week) look like:

I much prefer the smaller room, thank you very much! The suite they gave me was bare and kinda creepy! Must be Hong Kong’s doing but I sometimes find smaller spaces cosier and comforting.

The boutique hotel’s called The Albany and I got a pretty good deal for Aussie hotels. It’s on Toorak Road, not the most convenient cos no 7-11 within walking distance and anyway you go, you have to take a tram. It’s between Chapel Street and the City.

I was just telling Molely it’s interesting to be back in Melbourne after 3 1/2 years. For some reason, everything seems to be cheaper now. The low currency exchange definitely helps. You no longer have to do the mental calculation and you also realised after a few years, you also have a bigger earning (read: spending) power. So no, the prices are still the same (I reckon) but yayy for low Oz dollar! (Sorry Aussies.)

Speaking of spending, I saw this green leather bag with Christine yesterday and I really, really, really like it! It’s A$250, genuine leather and VERY spacious! I love the green and the gold hardware but it also slightly resembles the one I already have from Pedder Red.

Naice.

*do a Kirsten* I wanttttttt

Ok, if I do return to Greville Street, I’ll get it. If I don’t, then not meant to be! Ok? Ok! Since I’m on the topic of wants and purchases, a quick glance of a few of the stuff I bought recently (read: the past week):

My new Marni sandals and Kate Spade bag (no, it’s not similar to the green bag at all. They’re for completely different functions.)

Then… I also saw this beautiful red dress at Indigo and this damn funky leggings from Metalicus on Chapel Street… Thank God those shops weren’t opened when I saw those lovely pieces on the mannequins.

And speaking of lovely, I found myself in the most beautiful beauty store called Klein’s on Brunswick Street! They carry great brands such as Annick Goutal, Diptyque, Burt’s Bees, Aesop, Jurlique, Dr Hauschka, L’Occitane and Crabtree & Evelyn. Very organic, botanical, all-natural kinda brands. And the best part was their beautiful bar soaps’ packagings. They’re so unbelievably beautiful!!! I wanna own the store!!!

You should see their gift-wrapping! You JUST wanna get something for someone from Klein’s, I swear.

For a last note, a super funny image Christine and I saw last night as we walked past a laundromat:

Hur hur hur

Escape from HK’s summer for 18 days!

But I’ll be delving straight into Singapore’s scarier weather of humidity and rain. Bleah. At least summer in HK is guaranteed blue skies (on a different note, why does plural for ‘sky’ exist? After all, don’t we share the same sky??) and beautiful weather. And when it does rain, at least it’s exciting typhoons and Typhoon 8, which means a day off work! Hur hur.

Then after Singapore, winter in Melbourne! The weather forecast gives it a range of 8 to 19 degree Celsius next week. Yes, that’s a big range but haven’t you heard about how Melbourne can have four seasons in a day? Hahaha

Hmmm, 8 to 19 sounds ok… But I fear the winds. VERY FEARFUL. I was at the 12 Apostles at Great Ocean Road in Melbourne during spring and the winds were so strong, they literally threw me off my steps and I nearly fell just by, erm, walking… I’m light but not THAT light! The winds in Melbourne are not to be trifled with.

Exciting! I’m gonna meet up with my Australian colleagues and also a London colleague whose trip in Melbourne will coincide with mine. And catching up with my pals too!

Sweet, sweet Christine and her husband Dwayne are gonna pick me up at the airport in the wee hours of the morning (yes, 8am is ‘wee hours’ to me) and letting me put up at their place for a bit. Can’t wait to spend girly time with Christy and she mentioned the words “Korean barbecue dinner” and I swear I hyperventilated at the image those words conjured in my mind.

Then catching up over coffee with Matt’s friend Erika who was in SG for a bit and Marisa, who used to work for On Pedder in HK but is back in Melbourne now.

The SG gang and I had dinner just now and it was such lovely time spent. I’m really starting to enjoy every single meet-up with this group! So much fun and laughter. Hee. :)

Bad influence Lita made (ok, she didn’t twist my arm but still) me went shopping with her at H&M and I thought why not since the Matthew Williamson for H&M summer collection was out in stores today. And I have to say the summer collection is more impressive than the spring one!

I snagged a(nother) bikini for myself and a T-shirt for Matt. I had never, ever bought that boy any apparel cos I’m scared! Do you know how bloody tough it is to buy for that boy?! Not in terms of style but size. Broad shoulders and tiny waist. Who has body like that one! So mah fun.

Oh yes, I got another set of bikini too. It’s how cute!! Bow across the top and another bow across the butt. SO CUTE!

I really like this dress and pair of shorts from the Matthew Williamson for H&M collection too but I didn’t manage to see them at the store just now:

Lovely!

Gonna check the store out again during lunchtime. If they’re still not out tomorrow, then it’s not meant to be!

During dinner just now, Chee Meng was using his Blackberry Bold and I was watching him using it while trying not to salivate. And now PF got herself one too! For some cosmic reasons, I logged onto Amazon and the images that flashed before me were of the Blackberry Curve and Bold!!!

The metallic pink Curve is so naiceeee but I still really want the Bold!!! It looks SO cool and naice. And Obama has one too! I wanna be cool like Obama! I wanna look important like him (pretend only lah…)!!

Sigh.

Why can’t I be one of those unaffected people who don’t dig the latest fashion, like my sister? WHY? I blame it on the job. Totally. And hopefully this is a phase I’ll grow out of. But it’s been a long phase… OK. I better stop rambling. The tiredness is creeping in and making me babble.

I’m all packed. One last sleep on my own in my comfy little flat before I snuggle up in Matt’s arms for the next sleep! Yayy! Will be back in HK on 1 June. I’m all ready for the challenges and adventures that are to happen in the next 2 and 1/2 weeks! Bring it on!!!

Night world!

A little care pack!

When Bern came over the week before, she brought a pouch of goodies for me, carefully packed by Daph and Belle.

Bosom boosters?!?!

No price for guessing which is my fave! Thanks Belle for the MJ key ring! I luuuurve the metallic red!! And thanks XLD for buying that Acne Patch pack for me. She must be inspired by our Skype convo two weeks when I showed her the huge-ass zit I had in the middle of my forehead. (Thank God for fringe.)

And erm, yes, bosom boosters… Not that I don’t need them but I’ve already accepted my body, pals! And what’s with post-it notes… Seriously.

Aww

——–

Anyhow, I’m as excited as nervous about my Melbourne trip next week! Excited cos I get to go home this weekend as I’m going via SG to Melb on Emirates as they had that super cheap S$406 deal. And excited cos I LOVE Melbourne!! And it’s been 3 1/2 years since I last went there. So super happy to go back. And I’ll be there for close to 2 weeks! Woot!

But nervous cos it’s gonna be winter. :( I’d never done winter in Melbourne before and I’m scared!! And also cos I’ve so much to do in Melbourne. :(

  1. A 2,000 to 3,000 photo report
  2. A 24-page Melbourne city guide update
  3. Report on 15 kidswear stores
  4. A business/design report with one of the biggest Australian brands
  5. A detailed store write-up
  6. A report of interviews with buyers

All of the above to be done in 8 days… And I suspect I’ll have to use my weekends as well… Ah well, anything to get everything done so my heart can rest easy! I’m also hoping I can come back with more story ideas that I can file from HK… Hopefully!

On to cheerier stuff, I can see Matt, my family and pals again this weekend! Super excited! But super NOT excited about the weather in Singapore. I love everything about Singapore except the bloody weather. Ugh, just thinking about it makes me feel damn bleah.

Speaking of weather, it’s so hot in HK today! Guess summer’s coming. More so with the stink that the city is emitting nowadays, summer’s definitely approaching. And that means typhoons too. More Typhoon 8 please! (But only during weekdays in the daytime. kthxbai.) So we can at home and no need to head to the office! Hur hur. So please don’t come when I on work trips too please. I know, a lot of requests.

Yeah, 3 more days to Friday!

My thoughts right now.

After another Rock Band late night on Friday and colleagues coming over for Monopoly yesterday, I finally have a day of the weekend to myself and thanks to the precious me-time and great random music on my iPod, I feel relaxed, reflective and raring to go for the travels that are to come for the weeks ahead.

It sometimes astonishes me how much time I need alone. One weekend without it and I’ll feel all out-of-sync. That’s one of the biggest factor I like about travelling alone for work. I remembered during the period when the bosses were prepping me for my new job, they asked me to mentally prepare myself for loads of lone travelling for work and I was seriously quite puzzled why would anyone need mental preparation for that.

In my mind, being able to travel alone (albeit for work. But you just have to look for the little moments of enjoyment.) is one of life’s greatest luxuries. You see and hear more. And you do still share some of the happiest moments you’ll have in your life with someone really special – yourself.

One thing I’d learnt about living on your own and travelling lots alone is the little ways they contribute to your strength and courage that I just can’t decipher for you in details. You just realise them along the way. You realise the things you’re doing with much ease that you never thought you could manage. They surprise you and Life surprises you and I love that.

The need-to-know control freak in me doesn’t enjoy where in the world in which city will I settle down in or where I would be in the next year or two. Sometimes I miss the predictability I had when I was still in Singapore. As much as EVERYONE complains about routines, they’re a huge source of comfort as human beings are built that way. Routines are a few of the certainties that give people a peace of mind.

So I try to derive comfort in daily routines and tell myself I’m fortunate to have that exciting sense of unpredictability of a bigger picture. Some people seek so hard for the nomadic lifestyle and I used to too and when I get to enjoy it, I sometimes complain about the unpredictability and loneliness of it.

Human nature. The grass is always greener on the other side. We just can’t away from Life’s cliches, can we? I have to continually remind myself that when you can’t change the situations, change your mindset. It’ll make Life soooo much easier.

Really.

———–

I watched Bride Wars on the couch and I know it’s so typical of me but I teared from the deep friendship the two protagonists share. And no, it didn’t make me wanna have a huge wedding. Instead, it made me want my dream simple wedding even more.

I called Matt after and he was still out with a patient of his. The patient is this 10-year-old boy who comes from a less-fortunate family and Matt wanted to bring him out as his parents never have the time to do that. Matt previously got the boy a pair of New Balance shoes so he could do some outdoors sports and the boy was so stoked and his only request was that he wanted the shoes to look masculine. hahahaha

When I called him earlier, they were at East Coast Park bowling cos it was raining and when I rang him again later, they were at Citylink Mall looking for bubble tea.

It made me smiled so much that my boyfriend has such a huge heart and I could hear he was enjoying himself too, being a little boy at heart too. And yes, it did make me fall in love with him a little more and more.

<3 from my pals

Last week, I was at work as usual when Daph suddenly told me: “Go check Facebook now!”. I thought she was announcing an engagement or something – she was so excited! I obediently went onto FB and saw a series of photos Belle uploaded and couldn’t help  but burst out laughing in the office!

Belle came up with the idea of printing a photo of me and bringing it everywhere she goes so I’m ‘there’ with them all the time. My pals say spastic stuff all the time so you kinda learn to ignore some stuff after a while. So when she told me her idea (“BEST. IDEA. EVER.”), I was like, “Sure! Do ittttttt!”

I sent her a nice picture of me sitting at a table so it looks like I’m dining with them but she picked a silly expression one from the same range instead. Tsk.

My pals would then tell me they’d ‘brought’ me to Japanese dinner, to supper, to Butter Factory, Cuscaden and I’d even ‘kept them company’ in the CLEO office (since ‘I’m’ like Belle’s pet now, following her everywhere she goes). So they took pics to prove that I was ‘out’ with them.

Bern and Pam having an (obviously) animated convo with me.

Bern and Pam having an (obviously) animated convo with 'me'.

Even Cynthia and Solana joined in the fun:

They even fed me, showed me the menu and wiped my mouth. How <3. :)

And erm, poke ‘my’ eye with a toothpick too. So mean, ah fern!!!

Labour Day weekend

No, I haven’t forgotten that I have a blog! It’s just been an awfully busy week. With loads of planning and researching at work and then pals to host at home.

Bern and her sis-in-law, Janice, came to HK and it’s naice cos it’s the first time I have a good pal staying at my place. I made fun of them cos they were pottering around HK with their trolley luggage and I would have love to introduce them as my Da Lu pals cos that’s what the Mainland Chinese (no degrading intentions here. China is my motherland!) do when they come to HK for quick shopping sprees.

My Da Lu pals

My pals from Da Lu

And as with all tourists from Da Lu, theyre very rich to treat me to roost goose at Yung Kee.

And as with all tourists from Da Lu, they're very rich to treat me to roast goose at Yung Kee.

Although the three of us were cramped into a tiny space, I felt comfortable with their presence. It was funnn cos on Thursday night, I met them after work for Mongkok shopping, claypot dinner and hard-as-nail tui na massages. We laughed till I cried and I honestly don’t remember the last time I did that.

I was fearful when I went shopping with them cos I know myself! Cannot control! In the end, bought two pairs of shoes and an Ugly Betty-esque vintage jumper in the span of 30 minutes.

After being kneaded till we had red spots on our backs, we headed home contently and continued to chat till 2.30am! We didn’t even realise the time!

The next day, we went for yummy all-day breakie and I confessed I was nervous cos I couldn’t eat much and I was waking up every two hours the night before, wondering if it was time to go to pick Matt up.

When the boy finally arrived, I was over the moon. We didn’t get to go to the beach as he wanted to but stayed in to bake another batch of jam-drop cookies. Yayy! They were well-received by all my 3 house guests! (Well, they’d better… Hur hur)

After a foot reflexology session for the ladies and another tui na massage for Matt (during which I learnt about the first confirmed case of swine flu in HK. The expression on my face from the pain went very well with the horror of the swine flu discovery), we went for peking duck dinner at Spring Deer!

These pals from SG and Oz very hard to impress. They didn’t like the dinner as my previous guests. :( But to be honest, the standard wasn’t that great that evening and that went out to the service as well. Ah well, sucks.

We then headed home and Janice didn’t allow us to sit on the couch until we’re all showered. So we all sat on the floor in my tiny living room while Janice checked up on the swine flu updates and Bern and I had gossip updates instead. I missed my pal. Hur hur hur.

And I finally got to cuddle up into Matt’s arms to fall asleep again. :D Bliss.

The next day, Matt got his beach wish and we scooted off to Stanley again. Hmph, went off to the restroom for 10 mins and the boy got picked up by two Korean girls (well, that’s what he said. hur hur. But to give him credit, those two girls left almost immediately after I joined him! Eeeeyer! Girls nowadays…)

Stanley Beach

Stanley Beach

I kept telling Matt how fortunate he was to get such lovely weather cos it’s been foggy all spring in HK! The HKers were out in full force at Stanley and it’s actually quite nice to feel the energy, compared to the last time the boy came in March where it was all cold at 17C! This time round, it was a naice 27C.

We were supposed to join the SG gang at the Bun Festival in Cheng Chau and both Matt and I were actually really looking forward to it. But everyone kept telling me how packed it would be and in the light of a confirmed swine flu case in HK, that we should avoid packed areas. Such a pity. We were really looking forward to it. Matt even asked if he could climb the bun pyramids…

Speaking of buns, Bern tried the condensed milk toast on Sat night and she likes it and said, “Hmmm ya, it’s nice.” But I was sooo disappointed cos that wasn’t the reaction I was going for! I wanted the whole “OMG! This is damn bloody shiok” kinda reaction! So angry!!! She lah! Told her she had to try the toast immediately and she didn’t have it until a good 30 mins later! Didn’t do my condensed milk toast justice. Tsk.

The girls left on Sunday morning and Bern was rather worried cos she had the flu even before she came to HK and the confirmed case of swine flu was announced two days before they went back so she was afraid she had to be quarantined when she arrived in SG. But she texted me to say they only had the temperature check machines. Phew!

Matt and I continued his HK Beach Tour ambition and went to Repulse Bay Beach on Sunday after damn yummy brunch at a lovely cafe further down from my flat.

At The Brunch Club.

At The Brunch Club.

Repulse Bay Beach

The beach was more deserted than Stanley and I found it more beautiful too! Matt and I mused about staying in one of those apartments with the beach view one day and laughed at fathers bullying their kids into the waters while mothers got all worried. He tried to do the same to me and I shouted as many threats as I could while trying to outrun him. Spring’s still too cold for the waters!

We were traumautised by disturbing ads in HK magazine, pored and gushed over the Gisele spread in Vanity Fair and read about Bhutan together in VF and decided we want to go there someday!

We managed to get home early enough to bake more jam-drop cookies so that glutton can bring them back to SG and showered and rushed to watch the new Wolverine movie. That boy got into the spirit of mutants and put on his TMNT T-shirt…

And get to enjoy one last night (for now!) of cuddles before the weekend I’d been looking forward to for six weeks was over. :(

Back to the grind and the tedious photo assignment. Darn. Shall look forward to my fave cousin’s arrival in HK this weekend then!
