Happy birthday Yi Lian!

And tech bf! Hahahaha! Yes Sue and I share the same birthday and year. I planned to call her at midnight to wish her but that kiasu girl beat me to it by calling me at 11:50pm. May as well, by the time we hung up (she passed the phone around to the rest of the girls), it was just midnight. That girl got a fancy suite at St. Regis for the weekend. If only I’m in SG!

Bern called slightly after midnight from Bangkok. So schweet. And she told me about her car purchase. Omg, we’re all growing up! Daph just got her first car too. And me paying my rent. And then Molely gonna have her house all to herself when her parents relocate to Sydney…

Then, Matt said his birthday wishes to me on Skype, with loads of kisses that I couldn’t feel. :( But still, he’s been really sweet. He’s been apologising for days about not being able to spend my birthday with me for the first time. And while I was cooking my fine piece of sirloin (yes, at midnight. My birthday meal mah. hahahaha! Just a very late dinner!), he said sadly that he should be cooking for me instead. Aw. It’s ok baby!

As I mentioned in my entry yesterday, I had suspected Matt was sending me a package but then he threw me off track and told me he got me a present that I would get next Wed when I return. He even boasted of how confident he was of me liking my gift and this morning (after I got ‘legalised’ with my HK ID) when I arrived in the office, I saw a beautiful bouquet of my one of my fave flowers, hydrangeas!

Hydreangeas

I think it's damn gorge!

Between pink, purple and blue, I’ve always preferred purple and blue hydrangeas and I’m happy to see both in a bouquet! When I reached my desk, I was quiet for quite a while and my colleague Louise was concerned, “You don’t like the flowers?” I was like, “I do! But just a little taken with how beautiful it is…”

It is really beautiful.

The funny thing was, I thought the bouquet was sent by Chrissy, who’s in Melbourne now. Cos she sent me a little thank-you note for attending her wedding last Sept and the envelope was right below the flowers. But the note didn’t mention any flowers.

I continued to stare at the bouquet for a little while until I saw a small envelope hidden amongst the flowers. Aw, who else than my boy!

It’s not easy to please me with flowers because my entire maternal family is in the flower export business so I’ve seen a lot of flowers growing up and I even know how to wrap bouquets. And I’ve always detested those round bouquets with a dozen of roses with those little crepe paper wrapped around the individual roses. Hell, I just hate crepe paper. And I hate the whole “make sure each side is balanced and the weight’s in the middle” BS.

Whereas this bouquet has really interesting leaves and it’s not symmetrical while still remaining proportional. The colour combination is perfect and they use cardboard papers and fibre papers. LOVE. <3

So yes, this is also probably the reason why I never got boys sending me flowers. :( Ok – once when I was 15 (or 16?). During the whole I’ve-a-crush-on-you period of our lovely teenage years. Though that bouquet did fulfill all the aspects I didn’t like about conventional bouquets. Since then (oh god, it’s been a decade), I had never receive flowers from boys again.

However, I did receive two baskets of sunflowers from Jules though. Once was when she popped over to check in on me when I was fresh off a breakup two years ago (wow, it’s been 2 years!) and the second time was when I turned 25 last year. I was super stoked with the second one she sent me (aiya, first time heartbroken, how to get ecstatic over flowers right?) cos she sent it to the SPH office and everyone thought I had a boyfriend or admirer (none lah. Duh). HAHA!

It was fun pretending they were sent by a boy while it lasted. But at least I was honest to Jules about me relishing in that. The basket even had a little soft toy.

I know I grow up seeing flowers but gawd, to receive them – such delight! Gosh, I’m such a girl. But today, after I got over that girly happiness, the practical Capricorn in me returned and I was thinking that it’s really a huge bouquet of flowers and hydrangeas are not cheap. Oh no! How much did Matt spend?! He could have spent that money on something more practical… yada yada.

Louise almost told me to shut up and Angelia asked me to just enjoy the flowers. Yes, just enjoy the flowers while I do still get them. hahahahaha

I wasn’t appreciative of the fact that I had to lug the bouquet all the way home though. I left the office at 6 for my Aveda facial appointment, which is a 10-min walk. Then another 5 mins walk to the ferry. Then a 20-min walk from the ferry back home! I was carrying my bag and my laptop bag and the huge bouquet. I thought I looked like a dumbass.

As much as I wish Matt is with me, thank god he wasn’t with me when I was walking home. I hate to be one of those oh-i’m-walking-around-town-with-flowers-in-one-hand-and-boyfriend-in-my-other-hand girls!

I got quite a bit of stares and after a while, I got tired and put the back of the bouquet against my face and block them out. -_-

Oh gawd. Such a lengthy entry just on flowers. Seriously. I talk too much late at nights!

Ok, happy 26th birthday!
