25 random things

I don’t normally do those tagging me-mes but since I’m bored and in a very random mood, here you go:

And do expect me to be VERY random.

1. 2 nights ago, I dreamt that Karen brought 3 Chanel 2.55 bags and 2 Pradas to sell at those second-hand shops and at first, she wanted to give her Chanels to me but she decided to sell them in the end and got $5,700 for them. HAHAHAHAHAH. Should buy 4D. But damn you Karen! Never gimme the bags in my dream!

2. The night after sending Belle off at the airport to New York, I dreamt that all my pals and I were in NY too!!!!

3. I’m obsessed with plucking my armpit hair. Yes, naice to know. hehehe

4. I like FAT babies. MUST BE FATTTTTT. I know the chances of me having fat babies in future are low (especially if it’s with Matt) and the thought of that devastates me.

5. I REALLY, REALLY, REALLY love my niece and nephew very much even though I diss them all the time and call them names.

6. When I was a little girl, the first Christian name I gave myself was Helen cos of Helen Keller.

7. I’m not a shoe fiend but I’m a shoe snob.

8. I’d never entertained the thought of having an ang moh boyfriend. So when Matt came along, I was resistant to the fact that he’s white. Every time I thought of one nice thing about him, the thought “but he’s white leh…” would follow. Hahahahaah. I love you nao baby!

9. I don’t have a religion personally but if you ask me to hold the joss sticks, I would. And if you ask me to hold a rosary too, so would I. Doesn’t matter lah!

10. I’ve always knew jack shit about technology so was secretly stoked when my ex-colleagues at CLEO would ask me for ‘advice’ just cos I was doing the Tech Girl column. HAHAHAHAHA

11. Most of the time, I’ll rather spend time on my own then to ask people out. Too much effort!

12. Coffee makes me sleepy, jumpy and they give me a tummyache!

13. I love durians! But I don’t like durian sweets, ice-cream, puffs or cakes. Only the original form please.

14. The last time I was active in burning calories in my body was 11 years ago.

15. I really need to take a crap right now cos of the coffee.

16. You can’t see my smallest toenail unless you’re looking from 20cm away.

17. My boyfriend is a podiatrist and everyone assumes his girlfriend has darn perfect feet but they have no idea! hahahaah. I have a terrible bad habit of plucking my toenails.

18. I would rather stop plucking my toenails than to stop cracking my joints or plucking my armpit hair.

19. I’m quite the gross girl really. Not very feminine at all. Looks lie!!!

20. I can be overly honest sometimes that I don’t think before I speak.

21. I’m REALLY good at sussing the subtleties in speeches. So the next time you’re “kidding” about something bitchy you just said, I KNOW you’re actually not kidding… Tsk tsk.

22. I feel stupid if I don’t read the news.

23. I’m a very violent person who loves to smack the people I love. Matt and Sue are two regular victims.

24. I once dreamt that Johnny Depp was my brother. And we spoke to each other in Singlish while we were at a ball.

25. If I can pursue a degree, I would study anything pscyhology related.

Family reunion dinner

Happy Lunar New Year! A back post on my family’s reunion dinner at Che’s house on Saturday night. Photo-intensive!

Matt’s bro, Robs, joined us last evening as well. It was a shame Kristy couldn’t make it cos she wasn’t feeling well. Kristen, the prissy queen, soon took to Uncle Robs as well and started to call him Uncle Robert.

It’s so cute to see the kids playing with themselves. Most of the time, it’s Seth trying to join Kiks but it’s very funny seeing Seth entertaining himself when che che moved on to a new game or toy.

And Seth has learnt how to kiss! He was curious to look at the pics I took on the Nikon and would pull my hand to see it every time I snapped something and every time he did that, he would put his lips to the screen. Hahahaha

He doesn’t pucker up but just put his wet, sloppy lips to whoever’s cheek he’s kissing.

And I tried to con Seth into kissing me but wasn’t successful till yesterday during Reunion Dinner Part II!

More on today in another post! It was funny introducing Matt to my relatives for the first time and some even recognised him from the TV programme he was on.

And today for dinner, I sat at the dining table and literally ate non-stop for a full hour. Some aunts and uncles had joined me at the table and left and there I was, going strong. Got quite a bit of shit for that but I love dinner at my aunt’s place every CNY. Her maid makes seriously yummy food!

Ah Kwa and Martina

Happy reunion dinner day! Hope you have a good one! My family had ours yesterday evening at my sis’ but on a spur earlier today, decided to have another one at my parents’ home this evening since we had so much leftover from yesterday!

More on that in another entry! Cos I took so many pics with the DSLR, they’ll take a while to load up.

Before Sis’ place, I spent the afternoon with Karen in town. We met to catch The Reader and Kate Winslet gave a stunning performance and she does really deserve her Golden Globe for Best Supporting Actress.

We then headed to Wheelock Place since that girl needed to pick up some samples from the Prada office. So while she did that, I browsed at Borders, looking at the range of Valentine’s Day cards with much amusement.

While waiting for Matt and Robs to pick me up from their brotherly gym session, Karen and I caught up over iced latte and chocolate. I love my dear, dear friend. Nobody gets me like she does. She’s one of the few friends I really, really wish I get to keep with me in my luggage when I moved to HK.

It was a short session but it was of quality so I managed to walk (or rather, run) away to the Matt’s and Robs’ waiting cab feeling satiated. :)

My dear Ah Kwa.

My dear Ah Kwa.

Us!

Us!

The lovely earrings Ah Kwa bought me. Its so gorgeous and vintage looking. Can definitely keep as a heirloom!

And some pics of Martina, Ah Kwa and I during the spontaneous trip I took during New Year:

It was a nice, silly afternoon spent at PS Cafe at Palais Renaissance. Karen and I gave Martina shit for spending S$15,000 on his Hermes Birkin. When Matt arrived, I told him and his mouth was gaping open for a good 10 seconds and the first words he said was, “That can be a very good sound system…”

And then I told Matt how good Karen was by spending much lesser (50% off some more) on a pair of Martin Margiela pumps and the girl was proud cos it was flats and thought Matt would approve from his view as a pod. But Matt showed Karen how the flats were still bad for her. Hahahaha

It was just an afternoon and evening of whiling away and being silly. When we watched Ip Man together, Martina pulled Karen to him, accusing Matt and I of being a couple and said they could be a couple instead and so, they snuggled up to each other throughout the show. Very heartwarming guys!

Ok now, excuse me while I go watch my niece and nephew dance to Hi-5!

Cannot take it

Sometimes my pals’ silliness (a lot of the times, it’s Bern and Sue) literally have me rolling over in laughter. CANNOT TAKE IT! Their spastic-ness is so ……… that you will often times, just lose any word for it…

And this morning, I rolled out of bed at 6:30am just cos I couldn’t sleep anymore and Matt’s alarm hasn’t been the kindest to the both of us. Poor boy lugged himself to work while I sit at my computers with a nice bowl of prawn mee. And Mum’s fussing around the kitchen now with all the CNY reunion dinner prep this evening at Che’s house.

I logged on the Facebook to these images:

Please to find the original pic I posted up. But I complained about the yellow straws poking into our faces.

So Bern very nicely DI-ed all the straws to a shorter heights and added and took out other stuff.

And asked us to spot the differences on Facebook… Below is what transpired:

Mmmm, yes. I’m nicknamed as “Robs” among my friends. Don’t ask why. It’s been almost two years. Sigh.

Why 2 of ME?!?! Why not sue, pom, belle or daph?!?! WHY NOT THEM!

Yes, these are the very reasons I love my pals. Most of the time. Hahahaha

Such a cheer for an early Saturday morning!

Korean BBQ with the Makan girls!

Mmmm, I just had a thought. ‘Makan girls’ is not exactly the most glamourous term, no? Maybe we should find an alternative language to that. Like… the Bon Appetit girls? Or… Mangiarsi girls? What you reckon, ladies? Hahahaha

Mangiarsi is Italian for “to eat one’s heart out”. Not literal, I hope. O_o We’re usually not that hungry.

Anyhow! The point of this entry is that we met for our CNY-sorta dinner over Crystal Jade Korean barbecue last night and they insisted Matt joined us as they had yet to meet him so he did.

And since Matt’s bro and sis-in-law, Robs and Kristy (yes, very much to Pei Fen’s delight. ‘Kristy’ with a ‘K’ and a ‘Y’.) were in town, they joined us as well. They were in town again for five days till this Sunday from Katmandu, Nepal before they head back to Perth when we’ll join them in 1 Feb to the 8th.

It was such a delightful evening, of course with Pei Fen entertaining everyone endlessly again. I absolutely love her (husband) Ed stories. And I was happy to see Robs, Kristy and Matt really enjoying themselves as well.

Before I met the girls, I warned them I might not be myself cos I was nervous about meeting Matt’s family for the first time but I was so at ease and I think I really had the girls to thank.

Germ was seated next to Matt and being the tech geek that she is, she managed to give Matt loads of pointers, especially since they both have the Nokia E71. Which I completely plan to steal off Matt…

However, (baby) Kristy wasn’t there and I was a little sore about that. The poor little thing just had her vaccinations so it’s best she stayed home. If I had known, we should have postponed the dinner girls! But as Pei Fen said, she “ought to have some of the limelight now” instead of Kristy. hahahahahahah

Matt littered his comments for the night with loads of “alamak”, “aiyo” and “wah lau” and the girls asked him for more. And he started coming out with the, erm, more crude ones and I was so embarrassed cos now they know the kinda stuff I teach him!

In a redeeming effort, I complained to them how he loves to squeeze my pimples. In fact, he wishes that I get pimples more just so he can have the pleasure of removing them for me.

Then Kristy bursted our laughing, saying Robs was the same and that it’s a Herd family thing. Primitive love, like the baboons eh? Ugh…

Before we knew it, it was already 10pm and the restaurant’s bugging us to settle the bill. The waitress came into our room with our bill and when she came in, she stared at Matt for a little while and asked if he was on TV. Matt was confused for a while and I cracked up and PF was being his pimp and was going on, “Yes! Yes! Yes! The show about foreigners in Singapore right! Channel 8!” Oh gawd, I don’t know who to sympathise with more – the waitress or Matt.

When she returned, Matt stretched his hand out for the bill and she thought Matt wanted to shake her hand and she reached her hand out as well. It was so hilarious. But Matt went ahead to shake her hand anyway. hahaha

Then Matt, switching on his Singaporean mode, asked if we could have a discount then. Hahaha. Didn’t work though!

How I wish it was like the last time where Candice, Char and I had the luxury to stay at PF’s till 2am to chat. There were so much more to catch up on!

After the group parted, Char, Germs, Matt and I walked over to Lucky Plaza for cabs and I was on the cab when I saw PF’s and Germs’ really sweet msges about Matt and I. Aw, it’s always great when your friends are genuinely happy for you.

Matt was really happy to meet this group of girls too. In the cab, he was telling Char and I that we should get PF drunk to see more of her antics. And Char and I were like, “she’s just gonna be more violent!” which I guess, won’t be a good idea for our well-being. hahahahaha

Till the next time girls! And definitely again on Germs’ wedding. :)

Barack Obama is finally President!

This morning, I’ve been readling everything Obama-related for his inauguration ceremony. It’s so intriguing and reading his speech, I even got goosebumps!

Then, I got in my inbox two interesting graffiti works in the US sent by my London colleague and I thought it’s so ingenious! I’m really loving graffiti art.

And yesterday on the plane, I was reading the latest copy of Vanity Fair and there was this article on what went wrong in the Bush administration. Interesting stuff…

Now, hopefully, Obama will definitely be able to deliver the change he promises. Jia you!

Nerd talk over!

A belated gift to myself

Or it could just be an excuse to get something for myself…

I met the marketing girl this morning for a store visit and sigh, this is the reason why I don’t miss the days of styling and going to the shops! Temptations are hiding in every dark (and sometimes very bright under the spotlights) corner.

I was also eyeing a pair of Balenciaga and now, I would (mentally) smack myself if my thoughts ever wander that way. “No Yi Lian, no! You’d rather spend the money on a bag instead!” hehehehehehheheh

OK. No. Just Sportsgirl for now. :D

Can’t wait to be back home tomorrow. So exhausted right now trying to finish one last big report before the end of tomorrow… :(

Well, it’s OK. I have new shoes. Life will always be OK when you have new shoes. And bags. And erm, clothes…

I’m not an alien anymore!

I finally got this rather big piece of paper to certify that I’m legal in HK!

I look sorta retarded though.

So with this, I finally get to cut all the snaking queues at the airport’s customs. I can use the express queue and no longer have to analyse in 3 seconds which line I should go for after my bags got scanned.

Till I receive the proper HK ID card when I return in Feb.

I look horrendously gross (though I look even more terrifying in my passport) with my eyes not looking into the camera and my messy hair.

BUT! I have the immigration officer to blame. He kept asking me to look at the “red dot” so I did (but I was seriously short-sighted too with 650 on my left and 700 on my right too…) but I turned out to be looking elsewhere!

And he had a huge issue with my straight fringe and kept asking me to sweep it to the side. Hello! I don’t wanna look like an ah beng from 10 years ago with center-parted fringe ok!!! I swept some just to please him. I think in his daily blahs of his job, he delights in making all the expats look awful.

Ah, whatevs! Still can’t beat my terrifying passport pic!

Happy 10th month anniversary baby!

So, in a blink of an eye, Matt and I’d been together for 10 months. Just two more months and it’s a year! It honestly feels like we’ve only just started dating… Maybe it’s the fact that we’ve only been physically together four months before I jetted off to HK.

To be honest, I was worried how the distance would affect such a young relationship but half a year later, I’m happy to report that we’re going great and I still get bashful around him!

Earlier today, my family was celebrating Seth’s 1st birthday and Matt was so sweet to chat with me via Skype so I could see and hear what was happening. I even said hi to some of Che’s long-time friends and Kirsten’s paternal cousins. Terelle said hi and sang Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and ABC songs with Kiks as well. They were so hilarious.

Kiks chatted to me for a bit and kept saying “Happy Birthday Yi Yi!” Aw, that girl’s such a sweetheart. Before Matt arrived at Che’s place, he went to the Toys ‘R Us at Forum after he finished work with me on the phone, wondering around the store alone, contemplating what to get.

After much discussion with me, he got Seth a ball (my idea since he’s one and should learn about throwing, catching and kicking) and toy gun with fancy lights and sounds (of cos Matt’s idea) and bubbles for Kiks. However, of cos Kiks claimed ownership to all of them, looking at the way she played with the toys on Skype. Doesn’t matter since Di Di’s too blur to notice!

Kiks and her toddler pal. Is that the Sumo boy, Che? Hes so cute! He couldnt blow the bubbles, no matter how hard he tried.

Blur Di Di! Do you even know its your birthday celebration?!

Blur Di Di! Do you even know it's your birthday party?!

Matt texted me earlier while I was doing my grocery run. He was hoping I could come online cos they were doing the cake cutting and was hoping everyone would sing for me too via Skype. That was such a sweet thought but thank god it didn’t happen. So embarrassing to try to steal the limelight from a one-year-old!

Louise got me a CNY decoration piece yesterday so I put it on my metal gate once I got home. It’s so cute! And she was really sweet to even get that.

Its Doraemon too!

It's Doraemon too!

Does anyone know the yellow cat is Doraemon’s sister or girlfriend? Sorry, random question. Louise and I were pondering that yesterday and it would be nice if we have an answer!

Meanwhile, I’ve been reading loads of Susie Bubble recently and realised she’s a huge Basso & Brooke fan and I was like, “Wow! I have a pair of their boots!” I got it when I very first arrived in HK. Amy, Libby and I made a beeline for the S/S ’08 sale at Harvey Nichols and when I saw this beautiful pair of boots at 50% (or was it 60% or 70%?!?) off, I had to get it even though I know I don’t wear heels that much, especially more so in HK.

Ferosh

I’ve worn it… once so far. I love it but it’s just so unbelievably hard to wear heels in HK – firstly I’m not a I-can-live-only-in-heels kinda girl and secondly, the Mid-Levels is not exactly a heels-friendly area. It’s ok, I’m happy to just have this pair in my shoe collection. :)

Sigh, no DVD for tonight. I’ve been going to the store every evening to see if The Women (with Meg Ryan, Eva Mendes, Anette Benning and Debra Messing) has been returned but after four nights, still no sight. :( Apparently, it’s showing in the cinemas in SG now so it’ll be nice to watch it before I return on Wed and itches to watch it in the cinema!

Meanwhile, I really want to catch Rachel Getting Married, the movie that won Anne Hathaway her Golden Globe, when I’m back and I know just who’s the person to ask to watch it with me… And of course, Red Cliff II! Tony!

However, my lousy boyfriend with a goldfish memory said he’s kinda forgotten what happened in Red Cliff I and requested he watches it again. Seriously. -_- It’s ok, I’ll play the naice girlfriend and get the DVD here (not pirated hor!) for a 10-month anniversary gift, amongst others.

Ok, gonna go back to couch lazing with tabloids. Happy Sunday! :)

Happy birthday Yi Lian!

And tech bf! Hahahaha! Yes Sue and I share the same birthday and year. I planned to call her at midnight to wish her but that kiasu girl beat me to it by calling me at 11:50pm. May as well, by the time we hung up (she passed the phone around to the rest of the girls), it was just midnight. That girl got a fancy suite at St. Regis for the weekend. If only I’m in SG!

Bern called slightly after midnight from Bangkok. So schweet. And she told me about her car purchase. Omg, we’re all growing up! Daph just got her first car too. And me paying my rent. And then Molely gonna have her house all to herself when her parents relocate to Sydney…

Then, Matt said his birthday wishes to me on Skype, with loads of kisses that I couldn’t feel. :( But still, he’s been really sweet. He’s been apologising for days about not being able to spend my birthday with me for the first time. And while I was cooking my fine piece of sirloin (yes, at midnight. My birthday meal mah. hahahaha! Just a very late dinner!), he said sadly that he should be cooking for me instead. Aw. It’s ok baby!

As I mentioned in my entry yesterday, I had suspected Matt was sending me a package but then he threw me off track and told me he got me a present that I would get next Wed when I return. He even boasted of how confident he was of me liking my gift and this morning (after I got ‘legalised’ with my HK ID) when I arrived in the office, I saw a beautiful bouquet of my one of my fave flowers, hydrangeas!

Hydreangeas

I think it's damn gorge!

Between pink, purple and blue, I’ve always preferred purple and blue hydrangeas and I’m happy to see both in a bouquet! When I reached my desk, I was quiet for quite a while and my colleague Louise was concerned, “You don’t like the flowers?” I was like, “I do! But just a little taken with how beautiful it is…”

It is really beautiful.

The funny thing was, I thought the bouquet was sent by Chrissy, who’s in Melbourne now. Cos she sent me a little thank-you note for attending her wedding last Sept and the envelope was right below the flowers. But the note didn’t mention any flowers.

I continued to stare at the bouquet for a little while until I saw a small envelope hidden amongst the flowers. Aw, who else than my boy!

It’s not easy to please me with flowers because my entire maternal family is in the flower export business so I’ve seen a lot of flowers growing up and I even know how to wrap bouquets. And I’ve always detested those round bouquets with a dozen of roses with those little crepe paper wrapped around the individual roses. Hell, I just hate crepe paper. And I hate the whole “make sure each side is balanced and the weight’s in the middle” BS.

Whereas this bouquet has really interesting leaves and it’s not symmetrical while still remaining proportional. The colour combination is perfect and they use cardboard papers and fibre papers. LOVE. <3

So yes, this is also probably the reason why I never got boys sending me flowers. :( Ok – once when I was 15 (or 16?). During the whole I’ve-a-crush-on-you period of our lovely teenage years. Though that bouquet did fulfill all the aspects I didn’t like about conventional bouquets. Since then (oh god, it’s been a decade), I had never receive flowers from boys again.

However, I did receive two baskets of sunflowers from Jules though. Once was when she popped over to check in on me when I was fresh off a breakup two years ago (wow, it’s been 2 years!) and the second time was when I turned 25 last year. I was super stoked with the second one she sent me (aiya, first time heartbroken, how to get ecstatic over flowers right?) cos she sent it to the SPH office and everyone thought I had a boyfriend or admirer (none lah. Duh). HAHA!

It was fun pretending they were sent by a boy while it lasted. But at least I was honest to Jules about me relishing in that. The basket even had a little soft toy.

I know I grow up seeing flowers but gawd, to receive them – such delight! Gosh, I’m such a girl. But today, after I got over that girly happiness, the practical Capricorn in me returned and I was thinking that it’s really a huge bouquet of flowers and hydrangeas are not cheap. Oh no! How much did Matt spend?! He could have spent that money on something more practical… yada yada.

Louise almost told me to shut up and Angelia asked me to just enjoy the flowers. Yes, just enjoy the flowers while I do still get them. hahahahaha

I wasn’t appreciative of the fact that I had to lug the bouquet all the way home though. I left the office at 6 for my Aveda facial appointment, which is a 10-min walk. Then another 5 mins walk to the ferry. Then a 20-min walk from the ferry back home! I was carrying my bag and my laptop bag and the huge bouquet. I thought I looked like a dumbass.

As much as I wish Matt is with me, thank god he wasn’t with me when I was walking home. I hate to be one of those oh-i’m-walking-around-town-with-flowers-in-one-hand-and-boyfriend-in-my-other-hand girls!

I got quite a bit of stares and after a while, I got tired and put the back of the bouquet against my face and block them out. -_-

Oh gawd. Such a lengthy entry just on flowers. Seriously. I talk too much late at nights!

Ok, happy 26th birthday!
