Maternal instincts

For some reasons, I’ve became more and more maternal in recent months. I guess Kirsten and Seth definitely got that instinct going with the joys they brought into my family. Then since I’ve started living on my own overseas, I’ve become more domesticated.

I spend hours looking at houses in HK online, planning how to do up my own place, thinking about the areas I should stay in, counting my finances and cutting out pictures from magazines to form my own mood board for inspiration.

One of my ambitions about living in HK is to become a good cook. And when I have the time and my own place, I wanna try a new recipe every week.

Last week during China’s national day, some colleagues brought their families to the office to see the fireworks and I was so taken by Natasha, my colleague Karmen’s three-year-old.

She was so cute, she asked for siew mai when everyone was having KFC for dinner!

And most of all, the fact that Matt is so keen on kids too and I guess I’m a believer that a man who wants you to be the mother of his children is a man who wants to be with you for the rest of his life. Aw ok, mush. :P

Meanwhile, I have to channel my maternal-ness somewhere. And since I can’t just go out there to birth a baby, I’ve been obsessing over plants lately.

The lovely delphinium which I only paid S$1.50 for two stalks!

( Im worried my 2 weeks away may affect it furthermore.

My lovely pot of flowers, which is not looking so good now actually. :( I'm worried my 2 weeks away may affect it furthermore.

The forms of life on my office desk but I still want more, more, more!

The forms of life on my office desk but I still want more, more, more!

Ok, I’ll remind myself in the meantime that I should be married before having children – yes, yes. Yes, yes, I shall try not to have illegitimate children. I’ll try, I’ll try.

Nobu

YumsWoot!

Yesterday, Angelia surprised the content team with lunch at Nobu Hong Kong at Hotel Intercontinental. Yes, the Japanese restaurant you always read about in tabloids. The one where celebs always hang out at in London and New York.

It was really Japanese food at the finest I’d ever tasted. Most of us ordered the Signature Bento Box which contained the best black cod fish I’d had, half seared tuna salad, this fried prawn fritter thing, veggies w rice and salmon sushi:

I wasnt even hungry but I forced myself to eat as much as I could.

Definitely the best molten chocolate cake with ice-cream I ever had. The chocolate wasnt too rich so it wont leave you sick with sweetness overdose.

The indulgent lunch was to welcome Louise, our new translator; re-welcome Frances, our asian news editor who’s back from maternity leave and thank Libby, our acting asian news editor who was here for two months to cover Frances.

Stupid Karen

Karen Kwa got a mention on BB’s blog for L’Officiel!!!!! I am absolutely jealous. I did a feature on him for WGSN and he didn’t put the coverage on his site or anything and Karen got a “thank you”?! Hmph!!!

BAH.

Seriously upset.

Sevva

Tonight, Libby, Angelia and I were supposed to meet Lucy, the PR lady who looks after Sevva – a really up-class restaurant on the penthouse of Princes Building in Central. But poor Lucy fainted! Thus, we were on our own after a short chat and tour with the restaurant manager. Angelia was poorly so she left shortly after too.

I read some reviews online and I’m sad to say there haven’t been great feedback about the food and service. We haven’t tried the food, so I won’t judge but the service was impeccable. But that said, they knew we were there as journos, so I guess it can’t be a truly unbiased review.

However, the view was remarkable, the decor thoughtful and the music selection was lovely. It was also incredibly romantic and I wished that Matt was with me.

Libby is due to leave HK on Friday morning to return to London so it was great we could have a nice evening out. I’m gonna miss the girl, her British dry wit and her clumsiness. Also gonna miss how she gets me easily cos we’re so similar. :(

Autumn in Hong Kong

Hi autumn! Youre beautiful!

Hi autumn! You're beautiful!

Autumn greeted Hong Kong with a massive downpour on Sunday and I haven’t turned on the air conditioning since! It’s been a cool average 25 degree celsius every day and some locals are starting to get all decked out in their autumn wear now and it’s so exciting!

As I was telling Ray and Libby earlier, over my favourite condensed milk toast, for someone like me who has never experienced living in autumn (and winter! Shit, I’m nervous about that.) before, I’m not quite sure what to do with my very-summer and very-Singapore wardrobe. I guess I can still get away with my normal jackets, leggings and layering during autumn but when winter rolls around, I really won’t be sure what to buy at all!

I guess I still have a few weeks to shop for a nice chic coat. I don’t want to just get one like RIGHT NOW for practical sake. But that said, I know exactly where to go to buy very chic and very beautiful coats RIGHT NOW but I shall not cos it won’t be too easy on my pocket.

Meanwhile, I’m relishing wearing long-sleeved tops without perspiring a single drop of sweat for the entire day. Oh, it’s a public holiday in HK today. Yes, again! It was a public holiday too last Wednesday. Haha, don’t you just love HK and the 18 days of PH it has? Hee.

Revamp!

I dabbled in customising the site’s CSS for several hours today and I managed to tweak the html stuff! I feel so smart and it makes me happy cos it’s not often I get to feel this way. :)

I asked my ‘tech bf’ for help but she’s pretty useless when it comes to web or blog building.

But that said, I must give her credit for the time where I called her desperately from HK cos my MacBook’s internal webcam wasn’t working and she managed to help me solve the problem within minutes. And it wasn’t me being a retard, that’s why she could solve it so easily. She was just effi (Belle, new shortcut I came up myself. Can make it?) that way!

My tech bf and I being retards on Skype. I was holding Bender and she was holding some random robot.

Meanwhile, Germ (not my ‘tech bf’ but definitely more powerful. hahahaha) has so generously offered to give me a hand in setting up my first blog shop on LJ. We’ll see how that goes. So excited about it! Something to look forward to fill my days here. Woot!

Another of my fashion hero

Kate Lanphear, the Style Director at ELLE U.S., has made repeat appearances on The Sartorialist and I’m just loving all her damn-fierce outfits and solemn expressions.

Epiphany

For the past two weeks, my mood was constantly down. Nothing seemed to be going right. There was something negative to be found in every situation – HK, money, relationships, health, work… Everything was bugging me and putting me down.

On Wednesday night, after another tiff with Matt and then my whining about this and that, he reminded me of the things I could count myself lucky for. As usual, during the heat of the moment, my pride prevented me from absorbing the words.

However, the next morning while on the train to work, I thought about Matt’s words again and suddenly, I recalled that I’ve always been an optimist. What happened? Two weeks of constant unhappiness could possibly turn into depression but that was when I had a ‘re-epiphany’ (sorry purists, I know this word is an oxymoron. hahaha).

Just like love, happiness is a decision, not an emotion. There and then, I reminded myself to decide to be happy again and just like that, my mood was lifted and I was happily listening to the upbeat tunes of The Killers while embarking on that tedious 10-min (and that’s if I walk fast!) walk to my office at Harbour City from Tsim Sha Tsui MTR station.

I continued to be chirpy and cheery today, even though work was prompting my ulcers and cold sores to return to haunt me.

After work today, Libby had a last-ditch attempt to do more ‘local’ stuff in HK before she’s due back in London next week so we headed to Sham Shui Po for some cheap and yummy beancurd dishes.

No, we didn’t plan to pose like that…

The food was so cheap. We had two fried beancurd dishes, one beancurd dessert and two soya bean drinks for only HK$30 (S$5.60)! So this is where you can find cheap HK food. Finally. All these while, I find it incredulous when people tell me food in HK is cheap cos the prices of food in my living and working areas are at least a good 150% of Singaporean food prices!

By the way, have you seen anything like that on a typical evening at a train station before?

And this is just 50% of the original crowd!

And this is just 50% of the original crowd! Scary mary!

So I’ve heard speculation of Typhoon 8 approaching HK tomorrow evening but WHY ON A SATURDAY NIGHT??? Damn buay zhi dong, the weather.

Fireworks in HK

Today is a public holiday in HK cos it’s China’s National Day but I went back to work anyway so I could do some work and catch the fireworks at 9pm with some colleagues.

The fireworks lasted a total of 20 minutes, which was very generous. I guess I’m really lucky to catch my third set of fireworks within two months. They were so beautiful but they also left me sorta solemn, which I’m not sure why.
