Matt’s 2nd day in HK

It amazes me how well Matt and I slept on the mini double bed in my room in HK. I had never been the kinda girl who snuggles up to her guy and could only fall asleep if she’s intertwined with and became a human extension of her partner. I used to need  A LOT of my own space. Doesn’t matter I’m a skinny girl. If I turn on my side and my arm could touch you, you’re too near, I’m sorry. I could never fathom sharing a Queen-sized bed with a partner, let alone one of the size I’m sleeping on now.

However, with Matt, falling asleep in each other’s arms and staying that way for the whole night has became a norm. Haha, I guess it’s not as bad as I thought. Karen used to freak out at how adamant I was about not wanting to be touched when I was asleep and I had always been like that until Matt. Now I have to eat my words.

My current bed actually even felt a little spacious over the weekend that Matt was here. :) Ok. Mush.

Anyhow, Angel, Larry, Matt and I went for, according to Angel, a greasy spoon breakie at The Flying Pan. It’s apparently quite popular in HK and true enough, we had to wait for a while in the full restaurant even though it was 12.30pm and it only serves breakfast. All day. 24/7. What a lovely concept. I’ve always wanted a all-day breakie restaurant in SG!

And it was YUMMY! Matt and I ordered the monster portion to share and we could finish it (mostly his doing lah. I do the ordering and he does the eating.) and a waffle with vanilla ice-cream and maple-syrup too!

It tasted as good as it looked!

It tasted as good as it looked!

We spoke to the American owner and I first noticed her because of her very Parisian dressing and her gorgeous turquoise necklace, not realising she’s the boss. She spoke to us for a fair bit and Matt and I thought she reminded us of Sarah Jessica Parker/Carrie Bradshaw because of her longish face, facial expression, dirty-blonde hair and her sense of style.

Matt was amazed at how EVERY building in HK thats undergoing construction is held by Chinese bamboos.

After brunch, Matt and I took a cab up to The Peak. Not to catch the view. But to exchange a faulty toy helicopter which he bought from a shop at The Peak the night before. Like seriously. I know.

And since we were there, may as well do touristy duties like posing and taking pictures.

The Peaks view in the day

The Peak's view in the day

We then figured out a bus we could take down from The Peak. So within 15 hours, we had taken a tram, bus and cabs up and down The Peak. How efficient are we.

I love my ferry rides!

I love my ferry rides!

I then brought him to take a ferry ride but we were just trying not to fall asleep from the very oily and filling brunch. Reached back home, showered, packed, had an hour of nap and woke up to rush to IFC (International Financial Centre. The tallest building in HK) to check in and then take the Airport Express train.

The feeling of knowing you’re gonna be separated soon truly sucks. We didn’t even have time to have dinner together and Matt had to get to the boarding gate already. I went to get dinner on my own at fast-Chinese-food restaurant Fairwood where no one speaks a word of English or Mandarin, sat there on my own and basically just wallowed in self-pity. Hahahaha

But I dropped at Central after the airport, went to H&M (for the second time. hee) and felt better after just purchasing a belt. Matt gave me his leftover HKD and told me to get something for myself as a gift from him and the belt only costs a very small fraction.

So I went to Ikea (after getting tremendously lost) the next day to purchase a nice pink work table instead and the price was just nice with what Matt gave me! So yayy, I’ve got a pink table (need to buy my yellow foldable chair too that will match my polka-dotted pink seat cushion) coming tomorrow evening and I can stop using my MacBook on the bed, causing me an insurmountable amount of pain that I’m bearing with now 24/7. :(

Alright, gonna send another two work emails and hit the sack. Had an extremely busy work day with rather fulfilling retail purchases (I hope Matt doesn’t read this). Good night pals…

1st day of Matt’s 1st HK trip!

As usual, time flies when you’re having fun. I still remember counting down the hours till Matt arrived in HK on Friday evening and now, he’s back in SG, back to chatting on Skype with me. Though I do thank technology for bringing the distance closer, nothing beats physical touch. :(

We haven’t gone on enough trips for me to judge but for the 5 months we’ve been together, the holidays (just Langkawi and now HK) we’ve taken as a couple so far are always tremendous fun. I like not doing the typical things. In Langkawi, instead of lazing the days away by the beach, we explored the entire island and checked out whatever waterfall Langkawi had to offer. Instead of shopping (unless you count Matt’s silly purchase of a toy remote helicopter the next day) or going to Disneyland HK (that said, I still wanna go!), we went to the beaches.

I was a little iffy about going to the beaches at first but it was typical of Matt who wants to check out every beach in the world. Seriously, who goes to HK to go to the beach right?! I had to eat my words though. The beaches were beautiful though Big Waves Beach doesn’t have, erm, big waves. According to a local, it would after mid-Sept when Autumn arrives. And Matt was like, “so that’s when there’re more typhoons?” The local said yes and Matt was “……”

So there I was, waving my white flag (tissue) cos that boy made me hiked! I would love hiking on a normal day honestly but not in slippers and when my skin wasn’t properly protected (sunscreen)! We must had climbed a good 10,000 steps I swear. But the exchange is that we got spectacular view up there. I honestly didn’t know how scenic HK’s nature is.

Matt wants a beach-front house in HK. But I reckon he needs to sell his body for a coupla years first.

Matt wants a beach-front house in HK. But I reckon he needs to sell his body for a coupla years first.

He didn’t get very burnt, surprisingly while I got a tan really quickly, unsurprisingly. We climbed so high that we were very near to the top of the mountain (it’s really a mountain!) and though Matt offered piggy rides throughout the hike, I’m proud to say I didn’t take up his offers!

We cabbed back (only S$20 for about 30km!) home, grabbed the yummiest Hawaiian pizza I ever had in HK so far and went back for a shower and nap before waking up at 9pm for a ride up the tram to The Peak. That’s the touristy thing we love doing, seeing great views at the highest point of an island.

The wait for the tram ride was tedious and it didn’t help we were there on a Saturday night. The waiting area wasn’t ventilated at all and after 15 minutes, I couldn’t bear with the smelly and sweaty people around me. Bah!

But the view was really quite amazing. And it was really nice having the clouds passing you by. We perved at the fancy houses on The Peak and I pointed out to him my work building.

I'm surprised we didn't need the flash

The wait for the tram down was thrice as bad as the ride up so we tried to cab down. But the bloody cabbies wanted to charge us HKS$150 (S$27) for that short ride. I managed to convince a Mainland Chinese couple in my Mandarin *smirk* to take the cab with us and Matt was bargaining with the cabbie but when I spoke to the cabbie in Mandarin *smirk again*, he became friendlier and charged us HK$100 instead. hahahaha

We walked through Lan Kwai Fong and Matt wasn’t the least impressed. There was this drunk Caucasian dude who kept yelling at a bunch of four white ladies to ask them to join him and his friends. The poor ladies were quite turned off and Matt tsked and said it’s guys like him that give white guys a bad name. hahahahahahaha. Oops sorry.

More pics:

Brought him back to Jade Gardens for his 1st yum cha in HK and it was much better this time round, compared to my 1st time there!

Matt declared he likes HK just an hour after I’ve showed him around (well he’d better cos I’m here!) and then declared his love the next day after seeing the beaches.

We tried catching the Star Ferry but the last ride was at midnight so we trundled home from Causeway Bay after yummy desserts at Hui Lau Shan. It was real nice being able to fall asleep in each other’s arms again. It’s amazing cos we slept like babies even in that small double bed of mine (remember I mentioned it’s only 75% of a typical Queen-sized bed?).

It was sweet to be able to do that again but my mind couldn’t help but wandered to the impending separation the next day every now and then and it just sucked. :(

Failed swimming lesson

After learning of my previous swim with Kirsten and Seth, Matt got jealous and wanted to swim with the kids too. He wanted to teach Kiks how to swim properly so on the Sunday before I left SG for HK, we went to Sis’ place with my parents.

Little Kiks got all happy about swimming again though at first, she was distracted by the prospect of going over to her neighbour’s to play but I guess she reckoned that opportunities to swim are not as many as going to the neighbour’s so she went for the pool instead.

Kiks all excited but she didnt know Matt was planning to rid of her float.
Kiks all excited but she didn’t know Matt was planning to rid her float.

After waddling in the pool in her comfort floatie for a few minutes, Matt asked her if he could remove her float but she said no. He tried again a while later and she refused. And this cycle went on and on. We tried to get her to blow bubbles in the pool but she didn’t wanna either. So prissy!

A traumatised Kiks wanting to go back home while Matt tried to convince her again.

Matt managed to lay his hands on Kik’s floatie but by then she refused to return to the pool. So matt kept the floatie for himself. But he overestimated his ability to fit…

How about using it as an arm floatie instead?

We finally went back and saw that Dad was happily playing with Fat Seth. I haven’t seen anyone played with Fat Seth the way Dad does. He can devote a whole hour just amusing (or himself) Seth. It’s just so cute to look at.

Aw. :)

Meanwhile, won’t be updating this weekend as Matt’s arriving tonight! Woohoo!!! Just 4 more hours. :D

Work, work, work

I’m beginning (I hope) to ease into my new role here. It’s so different from my consumer lifestyle background that I need a lot of settling into the job. I constantly get an overload of information and though I haven’t started working the hours I used to back in SG (average 8pm on normal days and 11pm on deadline periods), I’m usually beat by the late afternoon because of the amount of info squeezing its way into my brain.

It’s more of a researcher role and one of the many challenges is to think of the viability of the story idea in a global setting – WGSN being a global company and my position covering the Asia Pacific region. Moreover, I’m so new to the HK retail scene. A LOT to learn.

Ever since I was taught to access work email on the www, I’ve been checking it every night. I don’t necessarily reply but I just like checking it. :/ Not a good start, I know, but it eases the amount of emails I need to read in the mornings.

There would be quite a number of tradeshows in the region in Oct and Angel mentioned sending me to Taipei or Shanghai so we’ll see! I haven’t been to Shanghai before and I wanna start doing all these cut-outs of designs I like from mags so I can get the local tailors to do exact copies!

Meanwhile, yesterday had to be the best weather I’ve ever seen in HK so far. It was clear blue sky for the whole day and come evening time, the sky was so beautiful as I took the ferry back to HK island.

Today, I brought Libby, my new colleague from London who’s here to replace a colleague who went for maternity leave for two months, to HK island for her first time and she was taken by the cheap and beautiful ferry ride. The view tonight:

HK island view from the Star Ferry

HK island view from the Star Ferry

I had this idea that all the rich and famous stay at The Peak but according to Elaine, my HK-born but Boston-bred colleague, only the very rich stays there. Only the top tier and people with ‘old’ money like Stanley Ho and family. I was just looking at the prices of the tiny apartments in Central and their average price was about S$5-6 million. A house at The Peak cost an average of S$20 million.

So no, even Tony and Carina won’t be staying there. Elaine said probably at mid-levels. So not all the way up at The Peak yet. Maybe 1/3 up. Hahaha

And when you come to HK, you notice a good 50% of the cars are all designer cars. Coopers, Mercs, Beemers, Lexus, Audi, Ferrari and Rolls Royce. Well, apparently cars are really cheap here but it’s the parking lots that cost a bomb because space is premium in HK. So you have to rent your parking lot at your apartment and another one at your work place and they could cost as much as the rent of your apt!!! I still can’t come to terms with that. I find it such a weird and foreign concept.

And now, being the Olympics season, you can see live telecast of the broadcast everywhere you go. This is the scene while everyone waited to get onto the ferry:

Olympics-captivated HKers

Olympics-captivated HKers

Arriving at Wan Chai Ferry, Libby and I then took the cab to Jaffe Road to hunt for my beloved toast with condensed milk, which I had on my first night in HK with Belle and pals, and I managed to convert her as well! Yes, my life is complete now. I’m gonna bring everyone who comes to HK to there.

The OMG-Can-Die condensed milk toast, which I will very happily become ambassador for

The street was filled with pet shops and we popped into every one of them. We both love fat and lazy dogs and I have my eyes on the puppy chow chow and especially the puppy bulldog!

I immediately imagined Matt and I getting our own dog when he finally joins me in HK and I told him about it tonight and he really likes the idea but doggies are really expensive here! We’ll take our time anyway. No rush!

Libby and I were also very taken by this squished-face kitty. It also has the most beautiful tail ever!

"Where's my nose???"

And then this lazy ‘watcha-looking-at’ dog at another shop. It’s probably the owner’s personal pet.

Aiyo, I wanted to squeeze its face.

Aiyo, I wanted to squeeze its face.

I’m honestly starting to like HK as an expat staying here. It’s only been slightly more than a week I’m here but if I’m here for the same period of time in the capacity of a tourist, I honestly don’t think I’ll know this much about HK as I do now. As a tourist, you don’t really care about all these nitty-gritty details. You just wanna know where to eat, sleep and shop and that’s all that matters to you.

But I love finding out the local cultures and etc so I really enjoy the process of finding out more about the local trade secrets, quaint little shops and alleys. It’s fun! So far, HK has turned out to be way more enjoyable than I thought. I was little miss dramatic before I left, kept thinking the worst of HK and being there on my own. Ironically, it may be the worst thoughts that managed my expectations but I really like HK.

Rude people and jerking drivers aside, it’s vibrant, exciting and it makes you feel like it’s the place to be in. Especially when I’m in Central during peak hours, I feel like I’m in NY (not like I’ve been there before).

Speaking of NY, Elaine, who’s lived there, was telling me how weird the city-that-never-sleeps really is. She’s seen two men, erm, masturbating IN the train on two separate occasions before and I just couldn’t grasp that sorta reality. But on the other hand, I found it really funny. She said you could even see used condoms on the tracks cos the train systems in NY are 24/7! Eeewwww

Ok, gonna rest up for tonight so can be bright and awake when Matt arrives tomorrow night. Can’t wait, can’t wait, can’t wait!

First event in HK

Brunello Cucinelli F/W 08 presentation

So I went for my first work event in HK. It was a typical A/W ’08 collection launch in a showroom but it wasn’t so much about the event. It’s the fact I managed to find the place without taking a cab! Woot!

The venue was at Queen’s Road in Central and I’d never been to that part of HK yet. With a very good map I took from the Visitor’s Centre at the Tsim Shat Sui Ferry Terminal, I embarked on that search when I reached the Central Ferry Terminal (Ma Tou in Cantonese). I took about 25 minutes to find the building but now that I know how to get there, just 10 minutes would do. There’s honestly nothing like getting lost to find your way.

I went into The Landmark. Standalone stores of Alberta Ferreti! Roger Vivier! Sonia Rykiel! Marc Jacobs! And there’s Harvey Nichols! I quickly walked past these stores, forcing myself to focus on my destination. I’ll have the chances to look at each store carefully when I have to shop next week for my work. See, I’m FORCED to shop for my work. Not that I want to… Honestly.

Such nice weather yesterday for a ferry ride!

Such nice weather yesterday for a ferry ride!

After the short presentation, where I asked to change my press release from Chinese to English, I hit the streets again, looking for the apparently famous dumpling noodles place, which my colleague Elaine recommended, at Wellington Street. I took another 15 minutes to find Mak’s Noodles but that was cos there were so many quaint stores along the way that I just had to pop into.

There was an Orla Kiely store! Everything was 50% off.

I finally found the noodle store. It was about S$5.50 for the average bowl of dumpling noodles. Unlike the one I had on my third day in HK, this one was remarkably good and tasted like it was free of MSG. The one I had previously was so saturated with MSG that after the meal, I felt nauseous and incredibly thirsty. Bleah.

A food critic gave Mak’s Noodles “the best dumpling noodles in the world” title. Well, I’m sure he hasn’t tried all the dumpling noodles in the world.

That said, the noodles were soft and smooth and the dumplings were sooo good. Love the soup too. Doesn’t leave me nauseous with MSG OD after. However, the serving was so small. It didn’t fill me so as I tried to find my way back to the ferry, I bought bubble tea. Cheap and yummy! I ordered my usual Pearl Milk Tea and they mixed the blend on the spot instead of having a pre-mixed blend.

I walked some more and saw a bakery with cars stopping by the side of the road just to grab pastries so I reckoned it would be good. I popped in, grabbed two Portuguese egg tarts for just S$1 each. They were still pipping hot! I must have looked so greedy but I’m in HK!

Popped into the General Post Office to get some stamps (only $0.40 to send a letter of less than 20g back to SG) and then back to the ferry. Love taking the ferry. I enjoy watching people rushing to alight while the ferry is still trying to dock. You see them sway from one side to the other and it’s just too funny. I should video that one day. Seriously, if you think Singaporeans are rude and brash, wait till you meet the locals in HK. Cut throat!

Left the office at 7pm and I was the second last person to leave and yes, that’s the norm. So different from my previous jobs! Relief. Took the MTR back to Tin Hau and went grocery shopping at International. I’ve checked out City Super at Harbour City (exorbitant prices like Jason’s but beautiful, beautiful meat), Welcome everywhere (it’s like our Shop & Save) and decided I like International best. It’s like Cold Storage back home and prices are reasonable though a 1-litre carton of Pura milk costs S$5.50 and a box of Banana Nut Crunch costs S$7. :(

Met Angel and Larry for dinner near her place and it was one of the most affordable and best meal I had in HK! Fresh steamed fish for only S$9 and it was big.

Can’t wait to bring Matt there when he comes to HK this Friday. Just two more days! Yipeeee

The rich can’t touch the ground

Do you know there are people, so rich in HK that every day, they take the helicopter to work? They take it from where they stay (probably at The Peak) to the helipads on the top of the office buildings to go to their offices on the top floors of the buildings. At least that’s what Trish told Su and me.

The price of each way is about S$100 (if you don’t already own your own chopper, that is). From the view of my office desk, I do see a lot of choppers flying to and fro Kowloon and HK island.

That’s what Angelia means when she says the rich literally doesn’t touch the ground like us normal people do. Guess they are probably not very down to earth. Hehe.

He’s-so-cute-can-die Seth

Sis just updated her blog and her new pics of the two babies are so funny. Seth is damn cute!

According to Sis, Kirsten learnt her nose-picking habit from me. :( Is it so wrong to nose-pick? We should always clean our noses, no???

Nice view today

Blue sky with fast moving puffy clouds today from my office desk.

It does look better in person. We’re moving office at the end of the month to the next tower (there’s two towers at Harbour City, just like Ngee Ann City) and hopefully, I can still get a nice view from where I’m sitting. It does help a lot when you’re feeling bleah about work. Not that I’m feeling that way yet, it’s still very new!

First Sunday in HK

I literally crawled out of bed this morning at 10am (very Exorcist, I know) to prep for my first yum cha. Angel, Larry and I reached Jade Garden, opposite Times Square and as we walked to Su-Lin and her friend Trish and bf, Simon at the end of the restaurant, I got excited looking at the food on the other tables.

When our food finally arrived, it was quite disappointing though. Other than the prawn chee cheong fun and fried yam dumpling, which were spectacular, the rest were ho-hum and I much prefer my regular haunt, Hua Ting at Orchard Hotel back in Singapore.

Brunch was really funny cos Trish was quite a character and Imran and Ivy, who joined us very much later, added to the fun. Soon, we became loud enough to match the typical Hong Konger and it was laughter and jokes all around. Trish showed us pics of her and Simon’s new apartment at Wan Chai and the view was spectacular and she did a great job in making the place real cosy. However, the rent is about S$4,500 and it’s just a one-bedroom! Can die.

After brunch, I followed Su, Imran and Ivy to their Muay Thai class at Lockhart Road (a short walk from Times Square) and it’s on the same street (like two steps away!) from the gorgeous Jia. I thought of checking it out since Matt’s such a big fan of Muay Thai. It was quite empowering see these women kicking and punching their lives away. I’m contemplating to pick it up. It’ll be a good self-defense skill to have too! And maybe I can finally have the toned back I’ve always dreamt of.

I left after 30 minutes. It was funny seeing kids in the class just ganging up to corner their Thai instructor who let them did it even he could easily defend himself. I went back to the streets and seriously, the amount of people in HK……. If you think SG is bad on a Saturday. HK is at least double of that on a weekend.

I headed to The Body Shop to buy myself an aromatherapy burner and energy-boosting oil. I haven’t got my ass to burning it. Bah. Another day!

Went to a cha chan tin around the corner with Angel and Larry for supper and they don’t have the condensed milk toast I’ve been lusting after since my first night in HK. Damnniittttt.

Matt went to have the Hungry Ghosts’ Festival dinner with my parents and bro tonight. It’s his first time and I found it so funny that he’s keen on going. I was on Skype with him then he left it on while he went for dinner. He popped back up after a while and grabbed a bottle of red and a couple of beers from the fridge cos he and my bro complained about how they served beer with ice.

Kirsten and Seth were over at my place today too and Kiks just hung in my room for two hours straight with Matt, while I’m on Skype with them. It was so nice and sweet cos that girl usually runs around the whole house. But staying 2 hours straight at one spot. That’s a record! I’m also impressed how clear Skype was. I could hear Seth gurgling in the living room!

I watched as Matt gave her a set of stickers he just bought from a boy who waits outside train stations till late to sell out his stickers and I smiled when he brought out a set of colouring pencils and markers and papers for Kirsten to paste the stickers and draw on. I beamed with pride every time Kiks brought up what she’s done to show me on Skype.

Last week before I left, I started to tell Kiks Matt’s name and today I asked her again on Skype and she remembered! Should see that grin on Matt’s face after she said it.

After that, they played their usual “upside-down” games, amongst others and soon, Kiks was sitting on Matt’s lap watching nursery rhymes and Kungfu Panda on YouTube intently while he chats with me.

Such a sweet, sweet sight.

I’m hungry again

It’s terrible to see images of food when you’re hungry late at night. I was just going through my iPhoto albums and found a few images of the spread when Matt, Sue and I went for Korean barbie at Crystal Jade a couple of weeks ago. It was so yums, I almost died of excitement just by looking at the raw food and the oiled hot pan.

And it sucks cos I’m hungry now!

Joan and Su-Lin, who are both working in Macau now, came over to HK for the weekend. Joan’s putting up at Angel’s tonight while Su’s staying with her sis. Joan, Angel, Larry (Angel’s bf) and I went vintage shopping at Mongkok this afternoon and I grabbed a lot of beautiful dresses. 6 dresses and 1 skirt to be exact. Hee. Will take pics once they’re back from the laundromat tomorrow!

I also bought a bumble bee jumper for Seth, which is so cute and funny and I imagined him looking ridiculous in it and that’s really the reason why I bought it. Hehehe, evil aunt again.

I also bought gifts for the girls and I know they’ll love it. :) I’m never big on buying gifts for people when I travel but somehow being in HK, I feel compelled to for some reason… I bought a toy for Matt at City Super yesterday and it’s so funny but I can’t reveal what it is yet until I give it to him next Friday. Can’t wait!

We had yummy pizzas for dinner before Su-Lin, Imran (Johri, he used to be the ed for Men’s Health in SG. He’s the ed of Peak in HK now while Su used to write for Urban and Cleo, where I knew her from.) and his girlfriend came over. We all went up to the rooftop, which technically belongs to Angel’s since her apartment is the top floor and it’s quite a view! I’ll take a pic of it sometime soon and post if up. The rooftop is as big as the size of the apartment and we were planning to have barbies up there sometime soon.

We talked about going or not going for supper or drinks and in the end, it became too late and we made arrangements for yum cha tomorrow for brunch instead. Yums! My first dim sum in HK. Can’t wait.

Ugh, still hungry. Should just try to sleep it off now.
