First event in HK

Brunello Cucinelli F/W 08 presentation

So I went for my first work event in HK. It was a typical A/W ’08 collection launch in a showroom but it wasn’t so much about the event. It’s the fact I managed to find the place without taking a cab! Woot!

The venue was at Queen’s Road in Central and I’d never been to that part of HK yet. With a very good map I took from the Visitor’s Centre at the Tsim Shat Sui Ferry Terminal, I embarked on that search when I reached the Central Ferry Terminal (Ma Tou in Cantonese). I took about 25 minutes to find the building but now that I know how to get there, just 10 minutes would do. There’s honestly nothing like getting lost to find your way.

I went into The Landmark. Standalone stores of Alberta Ferreti! Roger Vivier! Sonia Rykiel! Marc Jacobs! And there’s Harvey Nichols! I quickly walked past these stores, forcing myself to focus on my destination. I’ll have the chances to look at each store carefully when I have to shop next week for my work. See, I’m FORCED to shop for my work. Not that I want to… Honestly.

Such nice weather yesterday for a ferry ride!

Such nice weather yesterday for a ferry ride!

After the short presentation, where I asked to change my press release from Chinese to English, I hit the streets again, looking for the apparently famous dumpling noodles place, which my colleague Elaine recommended, at Wellington Street. I took another 15 minutes to find Mak’s Noodles but that was cos there were so many quaint stores along the way that I just had to pop into.

There was an Orla Kiely store! Everything was 50% off.

I finally found the noodle store. It was about S$5.50 for the average bowl of dumpling noodles. Unlike the one I had on my third day in HK, this one was remarkably good and tasted like it was free of MSG. The one I had previously was so saturated with MSG that after the meal, I felt nauseous and incredibly thirsty. Bleah.

A food critic gave Mak’s Noodles “the best dumpling noodles in the world” title. Well, I’m sure he hasn’t tried all the dumpling noodles in the world.

That said, the noodles were soft and smooth and the dumplings were sooo good. Love the soup too. Doesn’t leave me nauseous with MSG OD after. However, the serving was so small. It didn’t fill me so as I tried to find my way back to the ferry, I bought bubble tea. Cheap and yummy! I ordered my usual Pearl Milk Tea and they mixed the blend on the spot instead of having a pre-mixed blend.

I walked some more and saw a bakery with cars stopping by the side of the road just to grab pastries so I reckoned it would be good. I popped in, grabbed two Portuguese egg tarts for just S$1 each. They were still pipping hot! I must have looked so greedy but I’m in HK!

Popped into the General Post Office to get some stamps (only $0.40 to send a letter of less than 20g back to SG) and then back to the ferry. Love taking the ferry. I enjoy watching people rushing to alight while the ferry is still trying to dock. You see them sway from one side to the other and it’s just too funny. I should video that one day. Seriously, if you think Singaporeans are rude and brash, wait till you meet the locals in HK. Cut throat!

Left the office at 7pm and I was the second last person to leave and yes, that’s the norm. So different from my previous jobs! Relief. Took the MTR back to Tin Hau and went grocery shopping at International. I’ve checked out City Super at Harbour City (exorbitant prices like Jason’s but beautiful, beautiful meat), Welcome everywhere (it’s like our Shop & Save) and decided I like International best. It’s like Cold Storage back home and prices are reasonable though a 1-litre carton of Pura milk costs S$5.50 and a box of Banana Nut Crunch costs S$7. :(

Met Angel and Larry for dinner near her place and it was one of the most affordable and best meal I had in HK! Fresh steamed fish for only S$9 and it was big.

Can’t wait to bring Matt there when he comes to HK this Friday. Just two more days! Yipeeee
