I literally (ok, not so literally) only spent two seconds with Belle today. I stayed in until I couldn’t bear the boredom anymore and since the sky was easing up, I texted Belle to ask where she was. I got ready and met her within an hour, inclusive of the time I spent taking the MTR!
I know, no biggie. But, haha, it’s my first time and I managed to get to my destination effortlessly. The MTR system in HK is really easy to use. But god, the smell on my first two trains were intolerable. Belle said it was probably all the sewage the typhoon stirred up.
Whoever said you don’t need Cantonese to get around HK obviously hasn’t been here before! I was reading the Lonely Planet book on Cantonese Lena, Jo and Amy got me and was mumbling to myself while I was on the MTR to Mongkok and reminded myself of Matt when he takes the train with me. He would go through his Chinese book and repeat every word at least eight times.
I noticed Hong Kongers are not really into reading. Other than newspapers and tabloids, they don’t read while taking public transport, unlike many Singaporeans. They chat loudly on their mobiles, play their PSP or stare into space but they just don’t read! I was deeply perturbed. No wonder there’s no Kinokuniya here. :(
On the bright side, while I was walking to the MTR from Angel’s place, I noticed we stay near the HK Central Library! Gonna go check it out one of these days.
I also observed that Hong Kongers are not as good-looking and stylish as I thought they were rumoured to be… Lies! All lies! They’re definitely trendier than Singaporeans but chic? No, I wouldn’t use that word… Now Tony, where are you? Come out and prove me wrong!
Jo asked me about the men there and I told her it’s all lies and she was nice enough to say maybe the cute guys are afraid the typhoon would mess up their hairstyles so they stayed in today. Maybeeeee……..
Anyway, I only saw Belle all of like 45 minutes. I walked her and her pals back to their hotel and they took the airport shuttle and left. :( That girl bought so much!!! Even her huge Samsonite couldn’t fit everything. Tsk tsk tsk. When she finally left, I felt a little sad. :(
After they left, I went to have dinner on my own and felt solemn for a short while. It’s really when you’re in a noisy place filled with strangers speaking in a dialect you don’t understand that really make you feel more alone than ever. I had a bout of missing Matt and Mum and kept my mobile close to me, hoping for a text from Matt.
And as with every one who’s done that before, you know most of the time, you don’t get what you wish for… So, to keep my spirits high, I thought of the places I could bring Matt to and the new adventures we can embark together when he visits next weekend. Just 9 more days!
After purchasing some necessities (tissue papers and mineral water are perfectly essential!), I took the MTR back home as the winds are picking up again. I walked back and noticed the lovely L Hotel and Metropark Hotel are just around the corner from Angel’s place.
Walking back, I plugged my ears to Jack Johnson and I was soon smiling again. I do miss the people I love but I do get emotions I’ve never felt before. You really feel like everything seems possible, anything could happen and the future is decidedly exciting. I honestly don’t think I ever felt that way back in SG before.
